For security reasons the Department of Mathematics does not allow users from outside the purdue.edu domain to log into our change password web page.

If you are away from the purdue.edu domain and need to change your password you can us the
SSH
method as describe below. This only works if you know your math password and want to change it. If you have forgotten your password or it has been reset then this method will not work.

SSH into bers.math.purdue.edu.

Mac OS and Linux have SSH clients in the OS. See
man ssh

For MS Window OS you can download a simple
SSH
program called
PuTTY
which can be downloaded from
http://www.putty.org
. PuTTY does not require any installation, just double click on the downloaded .exe file to run.

Set
Connection Type
is set to SSH.

Enter
bers.math.purdue.edu
in
Host Name
field.

Click on
Open
button.

At this point a window will pop up connecting you to UNIX computer bers.math.purdue.edu. If a
PuTTY Security Alert
window pops up then click
Yes
.

Login with your math
username
and
password
.

At UNIX command prompt enter the command
passwd
.

You will be prompted to enter your current password and then prompted to enter your new password twice.

Your new password should be at least 8 characters and contain the following:

at least 1 upper case character.

at least 1 special character.

at least 1 number.

The program will let you know if the new password was accepted. You can always
CTRL-C
out of the
passwd
program and execute again if you get into problems.

Once you have change your password you can type the command
logout
to exit the session.

BANNER is the new administrative software that maintains student, financial and personnel data. The impact of Banner will result in three important changes beginning Fall 2008:

(1) Course rosters will now be obtained online from Banner (or Blackboard Vista) . The old system SIS will no longer exist.

(2) Final course grades will now be submitted online via Banner (or Blackboard Vista) . The old green sheets will no longer exist.

(3) Plus or minus grades are now possible .
(a) All 100 and 200 level courses are required to give final grades that may include +/- grades (where necessary).

(b) For all single-section courses above 300, giving final grades that may include +/- (where necessary) is strongly recommended.

(c) All multi-section courses above 300 are required to have a consistent policy regarding the giving or not giving +/- final grades (where necessary).

Reminders:
# You must use your Purdue Career Account, not your Math account.

# You must be FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) certified in order to access BANNER (or Blackboard Vista). Certification information is available at: FERPA Certification

# Be aware that you will have access to student data, most of which you don’t need. Privacy and security should be maintained when accessing student records.

More information on Banner can be found through the departmental Banner webpage.

The Department of Mathematics server room MATH-843 (Gauss Haus) has been around for many years. With the increase in our computer equipment and the age of the Gauss Haus infrastructure, such as electricity and cooling, over the last year we started looking at upgrading the Gauss Haus infrastructure.

When we started investigating the upgrade of the Gauss Haus we found that IT@P provided a colocation room in the MATH basement in MATH-B60. After evaluating the cost to upgrade MATH-843 compared to the the yearly cost of the colocation room, we decided it was more cost-effective to move the Gauss Haus computers to MATH-B60 than upgrade the Gauss Haus, which would have been a very expensive upfront cost.

The MATH-B60 colocation room is a controlled access room and we will be provided 1.5 racks of space, air conditioning, and uninterrupted power supply (UPS) electrical power. I believe MATH-B60 is a much better environment for our computer equipment, and with the UPS power we should not have the power disruptions that we experienced in MATH-843.

To move our computer equipment from MATH-843 to MATH-B60 will require computer downtime. To reduce the impact on math users, we have decided to make the move over two days during spring break. The first day will require that the entire network be taken down which implies that there will not be any computer services during this time period. The second day will only require certain computers to be taken down at different times and will only effect different users at different times.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS OVER SPRING BREAK

MARCH 11, 2008 6:00AM

Shutdown the entire MATHNET. All equipment in MATH-843 will be turned off and no services will be available.

Move and install computers zorn + Falcon Raid, conon (LDAP server), zada (Web Server), mailrelay + sonicwall firewall, and peano (dhcp server) into racks in MATH-B60

Startup computers in MATH-B60 and test that all equipment is up and running and on the network.

Startup computers in MATH-843 and test that all equipment is up and running and on the network.

At this time all desktop workstations (not including Sunray clients) and laptops should be up and have access to the network. The desktop workstations (not including Sunray clients) and laptops should not be affected by the move on March 12.

MARCH 12, 2008, 8:00AM

Shutdown bers, bessel and bohr in MATH-843.

Move and install bers, bessel and bohr in racks in MATH-B60

Startup bers bessel and bohr and test that all sunray servers are up and running and on the network..

At this time all Sunray clients should be be able to connect to a Sunray server.

The remaining equipment in MATH-843 will be shutdown and moved in no particular order. Before we move the remaining equipment we will send a shutdown notice to users giving them time to save any data and log off.

NOTE

Do not plan on running any long compute intensive applications during this time period as they will be killed.

We do not have a time of completion for the two days so we will put status information on the math computing web page. If you cannot access www.math.purdue.edu after 6:00AM on March 11 then assume all systems are down. When the math web server is up up you will be able to go to http://www.math.purdue.edu/computing and find status information on the move and related equipment.

Customizing the Gnome menus with Gnome 2.0 in Solaris 9.
- or -
Corrections to Solaris document 817-3851 “Gnome 2.0 Desktop for the Solaris Operating
Environment Systems Administration Guide” chapter 2, “Customizing Menus”.

So you have installed Solaris 9 with Gnome 2.0 on some 150 machines and now you
would like to customize the Applications menu to list your specific applications.

Every single pathname in that chapter is wrong and is pretty useless in actually attempting
this task, though I do make the assumption through the rest of this post that you have read
it.

1. Create a central repository for your menus and menu items:
To simplify menu administration you want to have all the menu items you are going to be
adding to be located in a single directory which is shared out to all your machines. In my
world we use the following directories that are nfs mounted on all hosts:

/pkgs/gnome/applications
/pkgs/gnome/vfolders
/pkgs/gnome/pixmaps

applications holds the .desktop files that are the actual menu items
vfolders holds the .directory files that will create the submenus for you
pixmaps holds the icons that will be used next to your menu items

2. Create an initial .directory file to hold your new menu items.
For example:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Math Dept Apps
Comment=Local Dept of Mathematics Applications
Icon=/pkgs/gnome/pixmaps/gnome-calc2.png
Type=Directory

NOTE: I still haven’t gotten Icons working for the Desktop Entries this way, though they
do work for menu items

3. Modify the
applications-all-users.vfolder-info
file:
The correct location of this file is:

/etc/gnome/gnome-vfs-2.0/vfolders/applications-all-users.vfolder

A. Before the first <mergedir> tag add the following two lines:

<mergedir>/pkgs/gnome/vfolders/</mergedir>
<mergedir>/pkgs/gnome/applications/</mergedir>

B. Fix what Seth had correct and his buddy didn’t understand
Inside the first <folder> tag change the following block of code:
From:

<query>
<and>
<keyword>Core</keyword>
<!-- FIXME: Seth, why would this be wanted? -->
<!--<not>
<keyword>Merged</keyword>
</not>-->
</and>
</query>

To:

<query>
<and>
<keyword>Core</keyword>
<not>
<keyword>Merged</keyword>
</not>
</and>
</query>

Otherwise every .desktop entry will show up in your root Applications menu.

C. Add our new menu:
Gnome will look in our
/pkgs/gnome/vfolders
directory to find the following .directory
files.
Before the final closing and add the following chunk of code:

<folder>
<name>Math Dept Apps</name>
<desktop>Mathapps.directory</desktop>
<query>
<and>
<keyword>Application</keyword>
<keyword>Math</keyword>
<not>
<keyword>Editor</keyword>
</not>
</and>
</query>
<dontshowifempty>
<folder>
<name>Text Editors</name>
<desktop>Mathappseditors.directory</desktop>
<query>
<and>
<keyword>Application</keyword>
<keyword>Math</keyword>
<keyword>Editor</keyword>
</and>
</query>
<dontshowifempty>
</folder>

Note: This adds two menus so you end up with “Applications -> Math Dept Apps -> Text
Editors” to remove the second menu take out the nested <folder>…</folder>, or merely un-
nest it to create to top level menus.

4. Now add some menu items to your new menus:
In
/pkgs/gnome/applications
start adding new .directory files and if they are properly
formatted they will start showing up in your menus. You will need to use the full pathname
to icon files if they do not exist in
/usr/share/pixmaps
.

Example:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Evolution Email Client - TESTING
Comment=Evolution Email Client 1.4
Exec=/pkgs/misc/bin/evolution
Terminal=0
Type=Application
Icon=/pkgs/gnome/pixmaps/evolution.png
Categories=Application;Math;

Categories to Menu Correlation:
Menu Name: Categories (Keywords):
Applications (root) Core NOT Merged
Accessories (Application AND Utility) NOT System
Other Application
Programming Application AND Development
Games Application AND Games
Graphics Application AND Graphics
Internet Application AND Network
Multimedia Application AND AudioVideo
Office Application AND (Office OR Spreadsheet OR
WordProcessor OR Calendar OR ProjectManagement)
System (Application AND System) NOT Settings
Mathematics (Application AND Math) NOT Editors
Text Editors Application AND Math AND Editors
Final Notes:
The standard .directory files live at:

/usr/share/gnome/vfolders

The standard .desktop files live at:

/usr/share/applications

The standard .png icons live at:

/usr/share/pixmaps

Their are a number of tools available that attempt to provide automated accessible testing:

Firefox Plugins

These tools are a great place to start and by passing these tests your website will be usable by screen-readers, braille printers and other accessibility tools. That said, making an excellent site really cannot be automated. Improving accessibility includes things such as descriptive links, content that doesn’t require a user to visually scan a page, using the <abbr> tag, useful description of images, labels, allowing text to be resized (use em not px), etc. The W3C provides an excellent article entitled: How People with Disabilities use the Web.

Accessibility software:

Kurzweil 3000 – “the comprehensive reading, writing and learning software solution for any struggling reader, including individuals with learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, attention deficit disorder or those who are English Language Learners”

Do sites using Google Analytics (GA) allow Google to correlate GA traffic with user’s search/gmail/maps/doubleclick/etc traffic?

Google Analytics is a web traffic analysis service offered for free by Google to website owners. The owner of a site merely needs to register with Google and place a snippet of javascript on each web page. Here’s an example of that snippet:

<script src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" type="text/javascript">
</script>
<script type="text/javascript">
	_uacct = "UA-555555-1";
	urchinTracker();
</script>

As one can see from the above code, a javascript file on google.com is included, the site owner’s identifier (_uacct) is defined and then the urchinTracker() function is called.

This function places four cookies on the end user’s browser. It’s important to note that these are first party cookies, meaning that the domain associated with the GA cookies is the current website and therefore, these cookies can only be read by the current website. This means that if x.com uses GA, and a user visits x.com, and then visits google.com, google can not connect the user’s analytics traffic from x.com with the user’s google.com visit using the unique identifier in the cookie.

That said, Google could connect those two visits with an ip address or ip and user-agent string. This is less reliable that the cookie, but still possible.

These four cookies are:

__utma

This cookie expires in year 2038 and contains a long string that looks like this:

2252076.984943658.1189608517.1189608517.1189610067.2

Email clients, like Mail.app and Thunderbird, like to know that they’re the only program accessing email stored on the local machine. This avoids potential email file corruption.

Sometimes, however, these email clients get confused and insist that another program is writing to their files. If this happens to you, you can assure Mail.app that its files are okay by removing a lock file.

From the command line, run this command:

rm ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index.lock

From Finder, navigate from your home directory, to Library, to Mail and drag the Envelope Index.lock file to the Trash.

Of course, sometimes Mail.app files really do get corrupted. If you continue to experience problems, you can reset Mail.app and wipe out all of its settings and start fresh*.

From the command line, run this command:

rm -rf ~/Library/Mail ; rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

Now open Mail.app and (re)create your mail account.

* Sometimes a fresh start is a bad thing. If you use POP to grab your email from the server, you should not do this. If you have spent lots of time writing client side email filter/rules, you should not do this.

Mathjobs.org provides nice documentation for Logging on, getting started as well as a User Guide and a short video introduction (in flash). Any question not answered by the available documentation can be asked of Math’s Web-Helpdesk.

You should have received (yet another) password in an email to your math email account. Using that password you can Login to Mathjobs.org at https://www.mathjobs.org by clicking the “… as Faculty or staff at employer institutions” link (under the “Login to MathJobs.org” heading). Use your email address at which your received your temporary password for your username. Upon logging in, you will be asked to change your password. You must pick a password that does not include a “dictionary word”.

Upon logging in, the list of applicants is displayed for our two open positions. TT is the Tenure Track Professor position, RAP is the Research Assistant Professor. (Please make sure both entries in *[RAP0018362007 TT0018372007]* are shaded green. If, for example, *RAP0018362007* is shaded gray, the listed applicants will not include those applying only for RaP’s. Click on either of these entries to go back and forth from green to gray.) Also, as the list of applicants grows, they will not all be display on the first page. Please click on the “ALL” button at the top (or bottom) of the page to display all applicants.

Clicking on a name will open a new window with that applicant information. Here you can read the various parts of the application separately (cover letter, letters of recommendation, teaching statement, research statement, etc.). You can click on the “All” button at the very top (to the right of “Address“) to generate a single pdf file which is just like a complete paper application.

For each applicant, one can assign Ratings, Refer the applicant to another faculty member, and even jot down private notes.

“Refer this appl to“: You can select other faculty on the list (right to the left of this box) who you think should also read it and select “email notify” to have the system send email to that person. Note: to select multiple usernames, one must hold down the the command key on a Mac (), or the Ctrl key on a Unix or Windows machine.

Your Private Notes. These notes appear as “yellow smiley faces” right below the applicants name once you return to the main Application List and after you click on the list again to update the system. These notes are only visible to you and the “managers” of the system who are the Department Head, Sally Goeke and the Webmaster.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure you click on the “submit” button at the bottom of the screen or else your work will not be recorded!

A useful tool for finding applicants that match specific parameters is the “Search” link at the top of the mathjobs.org webpage.

Due to the way Math’s email servers are configured, email cannot be sent through them (to another destination) unless you are on the Math network (in the building and plugged into a Math network jack). Although one can still read mail from their math.purdue.edu email account, they must send through a different smtp server. Below is illustrated how to set up Thunderbird to receive email from a math account while sending email through Purdue’s servers. This configuration works anywhere and requires that you know both your Math login/password and your Purdue Career Account login/password.

If you want to update your Publications list from MathSciNet by
redownloading a list from MathSciNet, here’s how:

Go to MathSciNet (the Resources page on the web site links to Rice’s mirror, which is quite fast).

Search for yourself in the “Author” search box and hit return.

It will give you a list of papers, some of which will be by you. Find a paper with your name and click on your name. Ensure that the list of papers is really by you.

In the upper left of the page, beside “Batch Download:” choose “Citations (BibTeX)”.

If you have 50 or fewer publications, hit “Retrieve First 50″ to the right of “Batch Download:”. If you have more than 50 publications, then one will have to mark the checkbox besides all the publications and then click “Retrieve Marked”.

Copy all the data in the typewriter font to a file; I’d name it
username.bib
.

On one the Solaris math servers (ie bessel), run this command in a terminal window:

/opt/csw/bin/bibtex2html -nobibsource -nodoc -noheader -nofooter -q username.bib

This will create
username.html
.

If all your papers are in MathSciNet, copy
username.html
to

~/WWWbio/Publications/index

Otherwise you can use
username.html
as the start of a more extensive web page of publications.

If you want to indicate that the publications are from MathSciNet as of a certain date, then add a line like the following example to the top of the file named index:

<h2>Papers listed in Math Reviews as of December 8, 2008</h2>

ODBC on OSX is difficult. Here’s how I got it working:

ODBC requires a couple of different pieces, specifically:

A data source – in this case FMSA8

A data client, we’ll look at Excel on a Mac

A database dependent ODBC driver, we’re using the SequeLink driver provided by FileMaker

An ODBC Manager that handles all of the ODBC drivers on a system

First copy the ODBC SequeLink driver from the FileMaker install CD to your system. (Also see the document “Installing FileMaker 8 ODBC and JDBC Client Drivers”, here: http://www.filemaker.com/support/product/documentation.html)

We now have our database-dependent driver installed. Our next step is the ODBC Manager. Apple provides /Applications/Utilities/ODBC Administrator which is supposed to work in 10.4.

One of the unobvious requirements with ODBC Administrator is that the /Library/ODBC/obdc.ini that gets created must be writable by the user that you’re running ODBC Administrator as.

First Authenticate and Add a driver by specifying a “Driver file” of /Library/ODBC/SequeLink.bundle/Contents/MacOS/ivslk18.dylib

Set “Define as:” to “System”.

Click OK.

Now Add a System DSN. Specify the driver that we just identified and make up a name without spaces. The minimum key/value pairs to be defined are:

Host “the computer name or ip address on which FM Server resides”

Port “default of 2399″

ServerDataSource “the name of a database on the FM Server without it’s file extension”

(Others possible values are UID, Password, ReadOnly, etc.)

Click OK

ODBC Administrator does not provide a method for testing a connection.

Some additional machinations within FileMaker are required before we can connect ove our ODBC connection. We must create a user within the desired FileMaker database that belongs in a “Privilege Set” that has the “Access via ODBC / JDBC (fmxdbc)” Extended Privilege. (File | Define | Accounts & Privileges). Additionally, you should ensure that within FileMaker Server Admin | Configure | Clients, “Allow ODBC and JDBC connections” is checked.

Please note that when using FileMaker Server Advanced, within FileMaker Pro | Sharing | ODBC/JDBC, the “ODBC/JDBC Sharing” option does not need to be turned on, and likely should be turned Off.

Isaac Vetter

Additional Notes:

An alternative to Apple’s ODBC Administrator is:

OpenLink ODBC Administrator 3.52:

Using fink, libiodbc is an easy install: http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/package.php/libiodbc

See http://del.icio.us/isaacvetter/filemaker+odbc

You can use the macros
\address
,
\salutation
, and
\closing
for the obvious things. By default, it uses a black-and-white version of the Purdue logo; if you have a color printer and want to use the black-and-gold version, say
\goldlogo
after you input mathletter.
Tell Brad Lucier if you have problems (but please see plaintest.tex and amstextest.tex first).

Unless your have already been certified by “Thawte Notaries” (the Mathematics Systems staff are Thawte Notaries), your email certificate will say “Thawte Freemail Member” instead of your name. It will be simpler to go ahead and contact the notaries before downloading and installing your email certificate.

First log into the Thawte Personal Email Certificate website and click the “Login” button on your right.

Click “accept” on the “Accept Defaut Extension” page.

Ensure that the pul-down menu lists “2048 (High Grade)” and click “next”. If the pull-down menu does not list 2048, you should upgrade your browser.

Your certificate is being generated. Please be patient. Depending upon your browse, you may be asked to create a new password to protect your certificate.

Review the information in your certificate, and if everything is correct, click the “finish” button.

Follow the “here” link to your Certificate Manager page.

You must have the recipient’s certificate before you can encrypt an email message to them. Some mail clients will automatically associate the sender of a signed email with their certificate. Other email clients, most notably Outlook, require the user to do this manually.

The Department of Mathematics is using Thawte Personal E-mail Certificates for digital signatures. Signatures allow recipients to check that the e-mail they receive from your addresss actually came from you.

The basic certificate” signs” your e-mail with a genaric “free personal e-mail certificate” that is particular to you, but does not contain your name. Trusted members, those who have their identity certified enough to earn 50 points, get a signature with their name embedded.

There is another reason you may want to get a Thawte Personal E-mail Certificate. When passing back and forth confidential information, if both the recipient and the sender has a Thawte Personal E-mail Certificate then you can also encrypt your e-mail to secure its content.
To obtain the 50 points necessary to become certified, users can then find Thawte notaries who upon certifying the identity of the user can give that user points.
