Prof. Dongbin Xiu is the recipient of a 2009-2010 “Teaching for Tomorrow Award.”  He will be matched with two highly experienced Purdue faculty who will over the next year address important topics and experiences related to teaching and student learning, and he will receive $1000 in faculty development funds.

Funding for the awards is made possible by the Purdue classes of 1944 and 1945

Professor Emeritus Robert Arnold Gambill, 82, of West Lafayette, passed away at his home on Thursday morning, May 14, 2009.

Professor Gambill was born in Indianapolis on February 20, 1927, to the late Charles Jennings Gambill and the late Hazel Fern (Mellen) Gambill. He graduated from Indianapolis Thomas Carr Howe High School in 1945 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. At Butler University he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and physics in 1950.

August 27, 1950 he married fellow Butler student Phyllis Jean Stultz on campus in Sweeney Chapel. They began their lives together at Purdue University. As a graduate student in Mathematics he achieved a Master of Science degree in 1952, and in 1954 obtained his PhD in the area of Linear and Non-Linear Differential Equations. His first posting after graduation was with Naval Avionics in Indianapolis after which he joined the Mathematics faculty at Purdue in 1960. During his tenure at Purdue he wrote two calculus textbooks, along with several papers.

Even after retirement in 1995, he remained interested in creating new mathematical equations. His favorite hobbies were fishing, poker and his grandchildren. He loved music from Dixieland to classic. Both at home and abroad, he loved his grandchildren and his role as a grandfather, his favorite quote being ‘love ‘em and leave ‘em!’. He was a volunteer for community service as a personal financial advisor, as well as serving as treasurer on the board of the ‘Friends of the West Lafayette Public Library’.

His sense of humor followed him everywhere. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, touching the lives of many friends, colleagues and students. He demonstrated responsibility, integrity and joy of living to all who knew him. He will be missed.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years and lifelong sweetheart, Phyllis Gambill, along with his daughter, Chandra Hronchek and his son, Robert Gambill II; grandchildren, Brian, Daniel and Jeffrey Hronchek, Maria, Robert and Luisa Gambill; and great-grandchildren, Audrey and Reesa Hronchek; and by his sister Carol Graham.

The family will receive friends at Hippensteel Funeral Home in Lafayette on Thursday, May 21 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The family suggests memorial contributions in lieu of flowers to Butler University School of Music (Att. Joy Rogers, 4600 Sunset Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46208), or to St. Elizabeth Hospice, (1415 Salem Street, Suite 202W, Lafayette, IN 47904).

The 4th Symposium on Analysis & PDEs will be held May 26-29 on the occasion of the 55th birthday of Professor Nicola Garofalo, in recognition of his scientific achievements and his dedication to the mathematical community.

It will bring together some of the world’s most prominent specialists in the general areas of Partial Differential Equations, Harmonic Analysis, and Geometric PDEs. One of the purposes of the symposium is to introduce prospective and young researchers to a larger mathematical community and help them to establish professional connections with key figures in their areas of interest.

Furthermore, the symposium will provide an opportunity to summarize some of the most recent progress in the field, exchange ideas towards the solution of open questions, and formulate new problems and avenues of research.

Organizing Committee: Donatella Danielli, Arshak Petrosyan, and Aaron Yip (Department of Mathematics)

Artists Scott Frankenberger and Linda Vanderkolk will talk about non-repeating tile patterns — “Penrose tilings” — at a Math Club sponsored talk Thursday, April 9, at 6 pm in Armstrong 1010.

Frankenberger and Vanderkolk were top math students in their high schools and started college as math majors before switching to art. Frankenberger is a Purdue alumnus and former visiting ceramics instructor. Vanderkolk is a continuing lecturer in the Patti and Rusty Rueff Department of Visual and Performing Arts.

They worked together to create the mural “Tesselation Tango” at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkley, California and a mural at Ivy Tech’s main hall. Frankenberger has also created murals for Purdue’s Food Science Building and Caterpillar in Lafayette.

Richard A. Hunt, 71, Purdue University Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, died at his West Lafayette residence on March 22, 2009 from Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

He was born in St. Louis, Mo., on June 16, 1937, the son of Allen and Lucille Hunt. He is survived by Ann Hankins Hunt, his wife of 51 years, their children, John Hunt (RoseMary) and Julie Wolf (Peter), and grandchildren CJ Hunt, Joanna Hunt, Martina Wolf and Evan Wolf. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Thomas.

Professor Hunt’s area of research was Harmonic Analysis; he was awarded the Salem Prize in 1969. His academic degrees were from Washington University in St. Louis and his teaching positions were at The University of Chicago and Princeton University. He came to Purdue in 1969 and retired in 2000. He received numerous outstanding teaching awards including the Amrine Visionary Award and published two Calculus textbooks.

He was a Master Gardener. Prior to 2000 Professor Hunt took course work in landscape design; and, during retirement he worked as a landscape designer with colleagues at GardenArt. His friends and customers frequently recognized him as he drove his beloved red MGA convertible around town.

Athletics were an important part of Richard Hunt’s life; he earned four varsity letters in football at Washington University and played competitive handball from 1956 until 2008. He competed in the Circle City Handball tournament for many years; his last competition was in 2008.

Taking garden tours with his wife, playing with his grandchildren, visiting with his family and playing poker with his math and statistic buddies added much joy to his active life.

Purdue’s Math Club is hosting a talk by Prof. Brad Lucier of the Departments of Computer Science and Mathematics entitled The Nature of Numbers: Real Computing on Tues. Dec 9, in BRNG 2290 at 6 pm.  Download the flyer.

In elementary school, we are taught about numbers in a concrete way – numbers consist first of single digits, then finite strings of digits.  We were shown how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide these representations of numbers.  What happens if you continue with the constructive approach to numbers and operations on numbers that began in elementary school?  Can you compute as many digits as you like of pi or the square root of 2?

The Math Club is dedicated to promoting enthusiasm and interest in mathematics on the campus through exposing students to exciting branches of mathematics they may have yet to explore in a casual, friendly and fun atmosphere.  You can find out more about the club at their website.
